***

I awoke to someone stroking my face, the way a lover stroked their beloved. I already knew before opening my eyes that it was Henri. No one I knew had such soft, cold hands…except maybe his brother. Said hands were gently probing my cheeks, lips, eyelids—that’s what woke me up, by the way—forehead, and chin. I swallowed back an annoyed groan and blinked my eyes, trying to rid them of something, probably small grains of sleep. My eyelashes brushed against Henri’s finger, and realization hit me.

“What are you doing?”

The finger disappeared from my vision. In its place was Henri’s face. He still looked the same. Like something would actually change? On a vampire? Ha. Funny.

“Just waking you up.”

“I think you could accomplish that without touching me,” I muttered, sitting up carefully. I looked around the room in a daze. My eyes fell upon the empty bed just across the bedroom. Liz…shit.

“Where’s my sister?” I asked the vampire with caution.

“You just missed her. She left for school about ten minutes ago,” Henri replied casually. School. Before I could even look at the clock, Henri beat me to the punch. “It’s nine in the morning.”

Nine?

“Oh my God!” I pushed the covers back, causing Henri to back up, and catapulted from the bed. I quickly walked over to my dresser, picking up a brush to comb over the bedhead so that it at least appeared to be a normal hairstyle and not a nasty crow’s nest.

“What are you doing?”

“I have to go to work,” I explained as I slipped on jean shorts and a green tank top, not looking at Henri’s expression during my undressing. I didn’t want to see the smirk on his face…but I could feel it. Next stop was the living room, with Henri following close behind me.

I stopped suddenly and turned. “Wait…did my sister see you?”

Henri gave me a bored expression. “What do you think? Of course she did.”

I bit my lip. Liz must’ve freaked out if she’d seen Henri Sinclair in our apartment. “Did you say anything to her?”

“Not much.”

I tried to shrug, then did a double take. My mind must’ve been slow to process today.

Of course.

I gave Henri a pointed look. “If it’s morning, shouldn’t you be, you know…a corpse right now?”

The vampire shook his head. “I’m older than most vampires, petit chasseur. I can last a lot longer than a newborn can.”

I let out a small sigh. “Yeah, but you can’t keep it up until dusk.”

“Correct.” He frowned suddenly.

Just then, my cell rang. I grabbed it off of the coffee table and picked up without a moment of hesitation. “Hello?”

“Toni?”

“Ethan?” I was more than a little relieved to hear a familiar voice. I didn’t know why, but I was. I caught Henri watching from the corner of my eye as I asked Ethan. “So, what is it? Is something wrong?”

“I’ll say,” Ethan grunted nervously. “Clary was able to infiltrate The Blood Diamond last night.”

My grip on the phone tightened in response. “She did? Did she find anything?”

“Oh yeah,” my friend confirmed with urgency.
